Our Philosophy
At Greater Dog, training isn’t just about teaching obedience—it’s about building trust, deepening connection, and creating lifelong learning opportunities between you and your dog.
We believe great training includes everyone in a pup’s life as well as a larger support community. Success isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it certainly isn’t about quick fixes or force. Our approach is positive, respectful, and rooted in patience and kindness, because the best results come when dogs feel safe, understood, and motivated to really shine.
We use positive training only—no prong collars, shock devices, leash-yanking, or scare tactics. Ever. We work with your dog (and you!) using praise, treats, toys, fun and trust to encourage behaviors we want to see more of. It’s all about supporting what your dog should do, not punishing what they shouldn’t.
We know not every enrolled dog will pursue certification—and that’s okay. Success can look different for every pup. Whether you’re working toward an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy or just aiming for a calmer, happier daily routine, we offer progressive group classes, 1:1 guidance, optional AKC certifications, and specialty workshops to keep learning fun and meaningful at every stage.
If a group class isn’t the right fit, we’ll work with you to find a better match. Our only requirements? A standard 6-foot leash and body harness (no retractable leashes, no collar attachments), an open mind, and a whole lot of heart.
We champion setting up every dog for success, and reactive or fearful dogs require special one-to-one training that falls outside the scope of Greater Dog. If your pup struggles with these behaviors, feel free to reach out via our Contact Page and we can help refer you to local specialists.
We’re here to help you and your dog grow together as a team. One step, one tail wag, one starry moment at a time.
Guiding Principles
★ Reward-Based Learning
We reward desired behaviors with things your dog actually enjoys—treats, affection, toys, praise—so those behaviors are likely to stick.
★ Clear Expectations
We focus on what to do, not what not to do. Clear, kind communication helps your dog succeed without fear or confusion.
★ Strong Bonds First
At the heart of our work is connection. When your dog sees you as a source of joy and clarity, real learning happens.
★ Consistency Matters
Repeatable steps and routines help your dog understand what’s expected, no matter where you are or who’s holding the leash.
★ No Fear Or Punishment
Fear-based methods create stress and long-term issues. We redirect behaviors and help dogs make better choices instead.
★ Solve Problems By Insight
We don’t just react—we seek to understand why a behavior is happening, then work toward positive, lasting solutions.
★ Relate To Dogs As Dogs
We meet your pup where they are. Every dog is unique and moves through different developmental stages—our training respects that.
★ Patience Is Key
Training takes time, especially during puppyhood or adolescence. We never rush or expect perfection.
Founder & Instructor
CHRISTINA DE ALCALA
Hi, I’m Christina de Alcala—founder of Greater Dog, certified trainer, and lifelong believer in the kind of trust and connection that brings out the best in every dog.
My journey with animals began early. I was the kid who brought home strays, trained our family dog to perform tricks in the backyard, and helped a neighborhood dog deliver her puppies. Volunteering at the local SPCA as a teen deepened my understanding of training, care, and responsible adoption—and quietly set the course for everything I do today.
Before launching Greater Dog, I spent 20 years teaching elementary students in public school while raising kids and dogs at home. But no matter what adventure (and chaos!) life brought me over the years, dogs were always by my side. My early-morning walks with them became a kind of meditation—quiet moments under the last remaining stars where I’d daydream of combining my love for teaching with my love for dogs.
That kismet combo became a reality when I left the classroom and enrolled at AZ Dog Smart Academy to earn my Professional Dog Trainer Certification. There, I trained exclusively in positive training techniques—no fear, no force—just communication, consistency, and kindness. It was a dream realized.
Now through Greater Dog (named after the Canis Major constellation), we offer structured, engaging training programs built on trust, curiosity, and joyous connection. I’m an American Kennel Club (AKC) certified evaluator in S.T.A.R. Puppy, Canine Good Citizen, Advanced, and Urban certifications. I specialize in puppy manners, socialization, and helping dogs of every age grow into confident, well-mannered companions—because I believe every dog has the potential to shine.
I’d love to meet you and your pup—and help everyone discover just how bright your dog’s future can be.
